The telephone is one of the most vital media of communication all over the world. Therefore, almost everyone who is anyone uses a phone, whether it is a wireless mobile connection service or a stationary landline. This connection can be a prepaid one or a postpaid one. Some people like to use all the variations of telecommunication at once for their convenience.
Therefore, the logistical process of billing every customer accurately for his use of the service is a crucial point of consideration for the telecommunication industry. The larger the number of consumers, the more tedious the telecom billing process is.

Prepaid versus postpaid billing service
A prepaid phone service requires the customer to buy the service before using it. This can be in the form of a cash card which has a code on it that needs to be fed into the phone for activation of the service.

Postpaid billing service involves paying for the service after using it for a stipulated period of time. This can be a month or a year, depending on the conditions of the connection offered by the service provider.

There are various methods of receiving one’s phone bill in the case of postpaid phone service. The most common way to receive the bill is to request it to be mailed to what is known as the "billing address" which is basically the permanent corresspondence address of the customer.

There is a time period extending a few days after the receipt of this bill within which the payment should be made. There is a grace period after the lapse of this deadline during which if the payment is made, then a nominal extra charge may be levied. But if the payment is delayed further, then this can result in disconnection of the service altogether.

One of the main problems of this kind of billing service is that the customer may not be in town to attend to the bill. Many telecommunication service providers have tried to solve this problem by allowing customers to access their phone bills on the service website by logging in with a username and password provided at the time of the service activation. This makes it possible for them to pay the bill online using internal transfer of funds through bank accounts or through credit cards.

This telecom billing improvisation has been extended to mobile services as well where customers can make the payment by sendign text messages to their banks to make the payment on their behalf to the mobile service the account is registered with.
